Treating damp below ground level is fundamentally different from treating damp in a standard above-ground wall. Above ground, damp is managed by controlling moisture in masonry or entering from outside. Below ground, the structure faces hydrostatic pressure: groundwater actively pushing against the walls and floor. That pressure fluctuates with rainfall, drainage and the water table, so a basement that seems dry in summer can come under significant pressure in wetter months. This is why below-ground work requires proper structural waterproofing, not damp proof course methods designed for above ground.

A dual scheme, most commonly Type A combined with Type C, is often specified on refurbishment projects, providing both a barrier and a managed drainage route.
A waterproof material such as cementitious tanking slurry (e.g. Wykamol HydraDry) is applied to walls and floor slab, forming a physical barrier against groundwater. Often used internally where external access is not possible.
The structure itself is made inherently watertight using waterproof concrete admixtures and sealed construction joints. Most effective in new-build basements where specification can be controlled from the start.
Accepts that some moisture will reach the structure and manages it. A studded cavity drain membrane (e.g. Wykamol CM3, CM8 or CM20) channels water into perimeter drainage and on to a sump and pump system.
